Lady luck is certainly proving to be no friend of the Tigers so far this season.
Just one win from the first four is no reward for the effort that is being put in. Yes, in terms of chances, Willington shaded the first half. Shakespeare in the Newhall goal made four excellent stops to save the Tigers. Sharp and Elks were both blocked out when well placed, and Collins fired over a free kick after a foul on Sharp. In the final minute of the first half, Fantarrow hit the post straight from a corner.
Willington started the second half brightly with a couple of well struck shots going wide. The Tigers then began to get on top, orchestrated by the excellent Fantarrow in midfield. Twice he put in Sharp, but the break of the ball just did not run for him. Then, Fantarrow's delicious cross was met by Cantrill whose shot was parried by the keeper, but neither Elks or Collins could convert the rebound. So as both sides cancelled each other out, nil nil looked the inevitable score line. But no, Willington took the lead in bizarre fashion. A hopeful free kick pumped into the Tigers' box, developed into a game of pinball as Newhall failed to clear, and a lame shot bobbled past the unsighted Shakespeare whose despairing dive could not stop the ball going over the line.
After that the Tigers poured forward and Fantarrow twice nearly equalised with two vicious long range efforts. The first miraculously tipped onto the bar, the second clawed round the post. Then came the sucker punch and proof that the Tigers were once again down on their luck. A defensive header was missed from a throw in that should have been given the other way and the dangerous Willington number 16 was through on goal. Shakespeare got both hands on the shot but it still found the corner of the net.
The Tigers still kept going. In the final minute Willington’s keeper somehow kept a goal bound shot out from Elks.
Tigers star man… Jacob Fantarrow… an excellent all round performance.
