For the second week running the Tigers were beaten in the final minutes, going down by the odd goal in three. This time it was last season's nemesis Uttoxeter who took all three points.
After an early Collins shot had stung the hands of the Uttoxeter keeper, the Tigers were soon on the back foot. Uttoxeter took the lead with their first shot on target - a blistering long range effort gave Shakespeare no chance as the Tigers failed to close down after clearing a corner. Sharp then almost gave the Tigers a glimmer of hope but his excellent shot was pushed away.
Uttoxeter then laid seige on the Tigers' goal. They hit the bar with a thumping effort from outside the area, then the post from close in. In goal, Shakespeare then twice kept Newhall in touch. First, he palmed away a swerving free kick, then he saved a penalty after the Tigers had been penalised for hand ball. Just before half time the Tigers could have levelled on two occasions. First, Collins blazed over after some fine wing play by Sharp. Then, Sharp could only find the keeper after a fine move involving Fantarrow, Collins and Cantrill.
The second half was only a minute old when Collins shot tamely at the keeper, but soon the Tigers had hauled themselves level with Sharp producing a brilliant finish from the edge of the area. The Tigers then had to defend bravely, as Uttoxeter had the better of the chances. Twice the Uttoxeter no 7 put in sublime crosses, but to no avail. They then missed three gilt edged chances, two saves by Shakepeare, and one hitting the post.
For all their brave resistance, the Tigers shot themselves in the foot when a clumsy challenge in the area gifted Uttoxeter a penalty. The resulting kick was blazed high and wide, but the referee ordered a retake for encroachment. They made no mistake this time, smashing it high into the net past Shakespeare for the winner.
In terms of effort and commitment the Tigers once again deserved to get something out of this game. But, in fairness Uttoxeter had the better of the chances. So the table may make glum reading at the moment, but as the old chant goes "the football league is upside down!!"
Up the Tigers!!
Tigers Star Man...George Taylor... a brave and honest display from the Tigers' skipper.
