Newhall put in a sterling performance in the seasons opener against Uttoxeter.

From the start the Tigers were, shall we say, on the ball... they were disciplined and showed very good positional sense, but the work rate was what stood apart.  Each and every one of them looked like they could have sweated blood for the cause.  Because of the tightness of the defenses, chances were at a premium.

Only once did Uttoxeter spring the Tigers defence. In the first half, a lovely through ball put the Whites' winger in the clear - but his fizzing cross was blazed over from four yards out.  Tigers only real chance of the match came two minutes later.  Jackson was put in the clear by Shakespeare, but the Tigers' debutant fired narrowley wide. Just before half time, Collins tipped round a stinging long range effort.

The second half mirrored the first, apart from it had even fewer chances.  I would have happily taken the point that the Tigers deserved, but then fate intervened.  A through ball caught the Tigers square at the back, a rather tame looking shot took the most ridicoulous deflection, and it spooned over Collins to give Uttoxeter a one nil win.

This was harsh on Collins.  Only sublime or ridicoulous would have beaten him, unfortunately it was the latter!
