Off the back of a five match unbeaten run which had seen the Tigers safe in the division, the Tigers faced a familiar foe in Uttoxeter – a good side who inflicted heartbreak on us earlier in the season – knocking us out of the cup on penalties.

With the boys challenged to express themselves and to get the ball down and play, the Tigers more than matched their opponents in the opening period – thanks largely to the combination of James, so often winning the ball in midfield, and the energy, strength and guile of Shakespeare on the Tigers’ right.

The Tigers play perhaps merited more in the first half.  They strung together some good passing moves through the thirds of the pitch but could never really fashion a chance.  As the half wore on, Uttoxeter began to push the Tigers back and they were rewarded with a goal after 15mins after a good low cross picked out an unmarked Uttoxeter player.

Half time and a goal down.  Changes were made in an effort to make sure the Tigers energetic running could be sustained until the final whistle.  But, it was not to be.  Uttoxeter were now the dominant force and were restricting Newhall to attacks on the counter.  After 25 mins, Uttoxeter’s pressure paid but in fortunate fashion as a Tigers block fell kindly to a Uttoxeter forward who forced Collins in the Tigers goal into a great save – only for the ball to bounce agonisingly off the Uttoxeter player and into the net to make it 2-0.

With nothing to lose, the Tigers pushed on and the game became end to end.  If the Tigers could force the next goal it would be game on again but the cross bar denied Fantarrow a goal from a superbly struck free kick.  It was the closest the Tigers would come.

Congratulations must go to Uttoxeter – who finish runners-up in the league this season – and who always praise our boys efforts alongside their own.

Tigers star man… Dominic James… broke up attacks and I can’t recall him giving the ball away in possession.
