A Helter Skelter quarter final ended in defeat for the Tigers after extra time and the lottery of a penalty shootout.

In regulation time Uttoxeter had a lot more shots on goal than Newhall, but most were speculative and the form of Collins in the Tigers' goal meant he was rarely troubled with the long range efforts.

In term of real chances, it was pretty much Even Stevens.  Collins made a brilliant stop early in the first half from a one on one.  Then, a fizzing Uttoxeter effort from the edge of the area was luckily headed onto the bar by Newhall's Taylor.  The Tigers were not just admiring the view though; Sharpe (twice), Fantarrow and Cantrill each sent shots narrowly wide.

There was no let-up in terms of effort and commitment in the second half.  The quality of passing and running off the ball by both sides, was excellent and this would have been a worthy final.

Both sides' best chances came in the final few minutes.  First, Uttoxeter blazed wide in front of an open goal, after Collins had brilliantly parried a shot. Then, smart approach play by Elks and Fantarrow put Sharpe clean through on goal, but his attempt sailed past the upright.

If the first two periods were good, extra time was a whirlwind!  Both sides created a flurry of chances.  Uttoxeter struck the bar and the rebound was brilliantly turned round the corner by Collins early on.  Then, Sharpe was put clean through by Fantarrow again, but somehow the keeper kept out his goal bound shot.  In the dying seconds, Newhall survived a goal mouth melee, Uttoxeter firing wide after the Tigers had put their bodies on the line to clear the ball.

And so to penalties, the Tigers missed theirs and it was a travesty that a game so exciting had to end this way.  There were tears from some of the Tigers players but this was a performance to be proud of and they can hold their heads high.

Tigers star man… Joseph Shakespeare…worked his socks off and was everywhere on the pitch.
