Willington started the brighter; their passing was neat and crisp and things looked ominous for the Tigers. That Shakespeare had only one save of note to make in the first half showed just how well Newhall grew into the game. As the half wore on, it was the Tigers that had the better of the chances.
A sound effort from Fantarrow sailed just past the post, then after a flurry of Newhall corners, Collins fizzed a volley just over the bar. Fantarrow then stabbed a cute low corner from Collins just wide. In the final throes of the first half, Fantarrow produced a piece of sheer brilliance - a magical through ball from wide on the right, put Collins through one on one, but his deft chip some how inched just past the post to leave the scores level at half time.
The second half was a nervy, tight affair. Collins headed wide a Fantarrow corner early on. Willington though, looked dangerous as their giant of a forward was a constant threat, and after being stubbed out by James and Taylor again and again, he finally broke through.
One on one, and the game looked up for the Tigers, but Shakespeare had not read that particular script and he sped like grease lightening from his goal to clear the danger.
You now sensed that one goal from either side would be enough and at last this season the Tigers got their bit of luck. After Cantrill harried the Willington defender, his loose clearance was picked off by Fantarrow who ghosted down the left, before cutting in with a low shot. The Willington keeper completely misjudged the pace of the ball and it bobbled straight past him into corner of the net, 1-0.
It was a lead the Tigers would cling onto until the end. Shakespeare saved well from a dipping volley before another slice of luck, this time with Shakespeare well beaten as a Willington effort rolled across the goal line and just went wide of the post.
But the Tigers were giving as good as they got. Elks and Fantarrow drove them forward late on to take the pressure off the defence and Cantrill (as Roberts had done in the first half) chased everything up front. There were a couple of late saves, but Shakespeare’s handling was superb throughout the whole match.
So, a fine win for the Tigers and great to see some beaming smiles at the end.
Tigers star man… Chris Elks…effort, commitment and tenacity.
