Stretton Eagles was the opponents for the Lions 3rd game of the season. The Lions were hoping to bounce back from the difficult game the previous week, however things didn't start well when Robert was injured in the warm up, meaning the team only had 1 sub available.
The game started very evenly with few chances in the early minutes, the game was very much a midfield battle with Jenson, Raj and Jake edging the possession over the Stretton team. The midfield tried to set Kieran away up top a few times but the Stretton defence covered well allowing very few chances. However the same could be said for the defensive partnership of Lewis and Kaylon who along with Josh in goal communication was great allowing very few holes for Stretton to get into a limiting chances for them to shoot.
Jenson and Raj both had chances to score but the ball fell onto their less favored foot so could only put the ball into the side netting. The Lions looked extremely dangerous from corners with Lewis arriving late on the edge of the box and narrowly missing a couple of times. The Lions continued to pressure Stretton with George coming close with a volley that grazed the outside of the post into the side netting. Jake showed some excellent skill with a great Roulette turn then setting George away but the Stretton defence stood strong.
The strong defending from Kaylon and Lewis limited Stretton to few chances until just before half time when Stretton had their best chance to score when presented with an open goal, however some how Josh managed to make himself big and used the back of his head to stop the shot meaning neither team had scored at half time.
The second half continued in the same pattern as the first with the Lions narrowly edging in terms of chances hitting the post a couple of times and putting the ball into the side netting. With the Stretton making goods saves from Jenson and George.
The game finished with no goals which is the first time I think we have had that result, but this certainly was not a draw-bore with some excellent football and moments of individual skill
Player of the Match was Lewis for his excellent reading of the game, and coming extremely close to breaking the deadlock. Next week sees a tough game with Outwoods
