The Lions played their second game of the season in the Lunch time kick off on a typical October day with the rain pouring down. The match was against a good Belvedere side who spent much of the last season in the top division. The game started evenly balanced with both teams giving away few chances and a lot of battling in the midfield, Robert and Raj were solid at the back despite constantly being tested. The midlfield of Jenson, Lewis and Josh working hard but given very little time by the intensity of the Belvedere midfield. George did try a bit of trickery but was given very little space by the Belvedere defence so was only able to create a couple of half chances. Kaylon made a couple of solid saves when in the 11th minute a shot from Belvedere distance spun in due to the rain. The contest was still finely balanced at this point with George hitting the side netting, and Lewis having a couple of good efforts from distance. Jake made some great challenges down on the left helping out the defence which was kept steady by Raj with some great tackles with the support of Robert. Kieran put some tough challenges in the middle against the physical Belvedere midfield, however unfortunately Belvedere hit 2 quick fire goals just before half time. Just before the end of second half the Lions had a chance to pull a goal back when George played a nice through ball onto Lewis's intelligent run who was through on goal but brought down by the Belvedere defender. From the resulting freekick Lewis was close but went just over the bar.
The second half was tough for Newhall some very intelligent play from Belvedere started to create space and chances resulting in a few goals for Belvedere which Lewis who was now in goal could do nothing about. Kaylon worked hard down the left wing to prevent some attacks but the team found it hard to get the ball up to Jenson upfront who did really well to hold up play when he got the ball. Newhall had a couple of half chances with George coming close with a half volley, Robert and Jenson nearly creating a clear cut chance but nothing really dropping for Newhall.
Raj continued to be strong at the back and made the tackle of the season so far with a last ditch challenge on the Belvedere attacker preventing a certain goal that even the Belvedere coach commented and clapped.
Overall, the team put in a good effort against a really good side and will have learned a few things with a couple of stand out performances from a defensive point of view, the attitude from the team after the match was excellent and the communication on the pitch was excellent between the players, we will go again next week.
Player of the game was Raj for his excellent defending and reading of the game.
