It was a little breezy with a chill in the air at the Oversetts stadium today but still 32 supporters turned out to watch Newhall march on to the next round after outplaying Winshill throughout.

A welcome return back from illness for Captain Jake gave Newhall a near full strength squad and they went after the game right from the start forcing 2 corners which came to nothing. The game was a little edgy but Newhall had not been under any kind of threat in the first 15, they came close to taking the lead with Ben but the ball just bobbled as he took his strike to fly wide of the target, James also having a good strike on goal that just missed the target. Then some more pressure from 2 further corners saw them take the lead, James supplying the cross and Harry (18) on hand to head the ball home unmarked and unchallenged. It gave Newhall a lift not that they had been playing badly but the goal clearly knocked the wind from Winshill’s sails as they went 3-0 up with goals within a minute of each other from Ben (23,24), the first one after a great through ball from James which he ran onto and despatched in the far corner, and his second after persistent pressure on their defence left him with an easy tap in following a blocked shot from Harry who was up against a giant in the opposition but Harry had him under control winning everything in the middle to allow James to create the openings. Newhall were enjoying the lions share of the possession and should have been further in front at half time but spurned 2 or 3 good opportunities, whilst Winshill had only one effort on goal and 2 corners to show for their efforts in a one sided affair.

Half Time: Newhall 3 Winshill Yellow 0

Newhall replaced James, Ben, Liam and Dilraj with Lewis, Josh, Luke and McKlane and were told to just go out and enjoy the second half but keep on their guard for the first 15 minutes or so to make sure their was no way back for Winshill. They certainly did exactly what Phil and Dave had told them to do playing with confidence and finding their players with some lovely football, chances came one after the other, McKlane had not found his shooting boots and should have had a hat trick by the time Connor scored a delightfully well taken goal on 45 after some great wing play saw the play switch left to right and find Connor in space, he took a neat touch before firing into the far corner giving the goalkeeper no chance, 4-0 and Newhall just kept playing neat passing football with still no goal threat from Winshill and when they did try and break out their own half Kier was on hand to mop everything up.

Further chances went begging for Newhall but they kept applying the pressure and after some changes on 44, with Harry, Sean, Tyler and Connor making way for Ben, Liam, James and Dilraj, Newhall made it 5 after Ben picked up the ball midway in the Winshill half, went round 3 players before toe poking the ball past their static keeper. Newhall were in a mean mood today and Winshill were unable to get out their own half until Kier should have gathered a ball over the top but he was indecisive on this occasion and it let the their forward in for a consolation goal on 65, clearly Kier was cold having had nothing to do all the second half other than pick the ball out the net, so Phil put Sam in for the last 5 minutes to let Kier get warm in a midfield role. Newhall had further chances to extend their lead and non better than when Josh struck a lovely left footer that the goalkeeper tipped round the post with a fantastic one handed save. Lewis, Luke, James Squid and Ben all came close with further efforts on goal but the final goal making it 6-1 belonged to Kier (69), more pressure from Newhall forced a corner on the Winshill left, James put the dead ball kick right on the six yard box for Kier to run in unnoticed and plant a firm header past the despairing effort of the player on the far post, a great goal that all the team enjoyed.
Final Score: Newhall Lions 6 Winshill Yellow 1

Phil and Dave summed up an easy victory by reminding the players they still had to turn up and do their job and they did that with a lot more passing foootball in the second half, they gave an unofficial Man Of The Match to Kier in goal who had a hard time of it trying to stay on his toes and keep warm mopping up several through balls from Winshill, but then managing to score a great header for the 6th having been given the chance to come out for the last 5 minutes. The team played as a unit today and covered each other as well as being vocal on the pitch, they also got into the game early something they have failed to do in the league so hopefully they can take that into the next league game.

Man Of The Match: Kier.

Next game: Marlborough Rovers Away

Another great game to watch, all the lads played really well. As Ron said in his match report,'The team played as a unit today'. When they play like this, they could beat anyone. Well done everyone.
