Another glorious morning at the Oversetts stadium watched on by 36 nervous supporters saw Newhall make hard work of a victory over a toothless Winshill who look short of confidence to keep them rooted at the bottom of the table.

With Newhall regular Sam at centre half out injured at the last minute they had to shuffle the pack with Lewis dropping alongside Jake, but his all action display consistently winning the challenges and headers deservedly won him the Man Of The Match award for a faultless display.

The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side holding onto the ball very well, it was almost as if the nervousness on the sidelines was being felt by the players on the pitch, to be fair It was a important game to both sides who needed a win today. The game never really took any shape until Newhall took the lead on 8 minutes, after a move down the left wing broke down on the edge of the area, James got on the end of the loose ball and after a swift bit of passing found Liam in space over on the right, as he struck his shot a Winshill defender desperately tried to block it but only helped it up and over their goalkeeper. This seemed to knock Winshill a little but they were still enjoying most of the possession but with Newhall having the better chances, first a deflected shot from Sean hit the bar and then he struck an effort straight at their keeper when it looked easier to score. Winshill were not so clinical and had no end product until they found an equaliser out of nothing on 23 minutes; after a corner was only partially cleared by Newhall the ball came back in very high and with no protection for Kier the Winshill defender was able to out jump him to head the ball home.

The game continued to be scrappy with half chances at either end before another Newhall raid down the left with Sean saw him cut inside and play the ball to Harry on the edge of the box he rolled the defender and was pulled down for a penalty on 28 that James despatched thumping it straight down the middle for a 2-1 lead.
Winshill applied more pressure and had 3 good opportunities before the break and but for poor finishing and Kier saving with his feet the score could have been different at half time.

Half Time: Newhall 2 Winshill 1

The half time changes were made with Adam, Connor and Harry making way Josh, Ben and Dilraj, with Sean switching to right back and Liam going up front, they were sent out with a clear message to stop looking for the long ball and play their game like they do in training. It seemed to have worked as they started brighter and for the first time in the game were winning the battle in the midfield playing to the wings and this created a number of chances that couldn’t be converted, the best one falling to Ben who frustratingly shot straight at their keeper a great chance to extend the lead. Luckily it wasn’t too long after that chance they did extend their advantage, they forced a couple of corners and from the second one they found the net, the ball in was blocked and fell to Dilraj who put a great ball over the top of the last defender on their left, finding Luke (48) unmarked who kept his concentration as the ball bounced to volley it in at the near post giving their keeper no chance. A bit of breathing space but we all knew that wouldn’t be the end of it as Winshill looked to get back in the game, they over hit a couple of through balls that were gathered by Kier who was having a good game in goal. Newhall were still having their chances as well but put the game out of reach on 61 after James skipped a couple of challenges to smack a long range effort high into the far corner, the goalkeeper seemed to lose the flight of the ball as he watched it go over his head. Winshill tried to come back again with a couple of dangerous corners the second one ending up with an effort over the bar from close range, a few tactical changes towards the end saw Newhall home safe with another 3 points secured in their attempt to stay in this division.

Final Score: Newhall Lions 4 Winshill Green 1

Phil and Dave were pleased overall with the result, more with the second half performance which has been the case on most of their games so far in the top flight, they need to get at teams right from the start and not give so much space away. Several players were playing out of position today and that didn’t help, but they all chipped in, Harry also getting a mention after coming back on in the second half for McKlane to plug the hole Winshill were starting to exploit in midfield as they pushed Newhall back, a mention also for some great all round defending all through the game.

Man Of The Match: Lewis.

Next game: Branston Away

The win was well deserved today but as Ron says, you need to play from the first whistle as that is where we are being caught out.  Looking forward to next weeks game.
