The new look Newhall Rams took to the field for the first time this season in what will almost certainly turn out to be one of the toughest games of the season, away to a Winshill Green side that were in Division One last season.
Rams had Lewis in goal, Callum, Thomas, Mitchell L and Zakk across the back, Rhys and Mitchell S in the centre of midfield with Ben and Charlie on the wings, Brett and Ethan in attack. Adam, Ksha and Kian starting as substitutes.
With Mitchell S handed the captain's armband following a vote from the players at training this week and Ben confirmed as vice-captain. Encouraging words from the captain pre-match certainly sent the side out in positive fashion.
There was plenty of energy and determination from the Rams in the early stages even when Winshill took the lead from a precise curled finish midway through the first half. An excellent headed clearance off the line from Zakk prevented the home side doubling their advantage but after some good saves from Lewis a second came just before half time when a cross from the left was headed home in the centre.
The Rams were unlucky not to have a goal to show for their efforts when a long range free kick from Mitchell L. bounced over the Winshill keeper but landed just wide of the post.
Half time Winshill 2 - 0 Newhall Rams
The players remained positive at half time and came out for the second half knowing they were playing up the slope on the Winshill pitch. A good early save from Lewis prevented a third for the home side but another good save shortly after fell kindly for the Winshill striker to convert the rebound.
Having expended a lot of energy in the first half our young Rams began to tire a little and Winshill fired home a couple of long range efforts to take the game away from Newhall once and for all.
Newhall continued to battle bravely and despite more late goals going in late on to add something of a gloss to the Winshill scoreline the feeling after the game was one that positives could definitely be taken from the game. The team played together in great spirit, something that will grow over time the more they continue to play as a team. Winshill will be one of the better teams in our league this season so defeat to them is nothing to get too disappointed with. There were plenty of good things today and things for us to work on in training. The main things is for the team to be out there playing and, hopefully, enjoying their football.
On to Abbotts Bromley next week.
