NEWHALL GET OVER THE HILL IN THEIR LAST GAME AT OVERSETTS

It was an emotional day today with the last game for the lads at Oversetts and they had nothing to play for having lost to Woodville last week, but they could stop Winshill from joining their first team in division 1, and that was how it turned out to be with Mayfield winning, Winshill had failed in a last ditch attempt to win promotion.

With new players Brad and Oliver joining the squad it was a different feel about Newhall today and the lads put in a far better performance than last week in a pulsating game which had everything, tackles, challenges and tussles all over the park a complete contrast to last weeks effort which saw Newhall very lacklustre. It was Newhalll that took the lead on 12 minutes with some great work down the Newhall right which finally saw a great throughball from Lewis find Sean who made no mistake from the edge of the 6 yard box, it was nothing more than they deserved having generally controlled the game kicking downhill in the first half.

You could sense that Winshill wanted to make a go of it and they slowly exerted the pressure and were awarded a penalty after a harsh decision  for a push by Liam on 25 minutes, we feared the worst but Harry flew to his right to keep Callum's effort out, and when the rebound fell to another Winshill player Harry made another brilliant stop to push the ball round for a corner. Winshill kept the pressure up and had several corners on the trot but failed to make any of them count, then they had a breakaway and their forward struck a great goalbound effort that cannoned off the inside of the post, rolled along the line for a last ditch tackle by Liam to prevent the on rushing Winshill winger finding the empty net.

Half Time: Newhall 1 Winshill 0

Newhall had to dig deep against what we knew would be an onslought of balls over the top for the second half but Newhall had played the better football in that first half and really should have been further ahead. The second half went exactly the way we expected it to with constant long balls being Winshill's tactics, the Newhall backline had to hold it's nerve and line as Winshill were caught offside time and time again, they claimed a second penalty when Sam challenged inside the box but it was a fair shoulder charge. Then they had a goal disallowed when they failed to stay behind the on rushing wing player who beat the offisde trap for the first time, his forward pass found a Winshill player forward as well, a clear offside goal.

Brad was in the thick of it throughout and came close to winning the man of the match award for his all round action man performance, but he could do nothing to stop the late equaliser from Winsill which was a great strike form the edge of the box by Jake after Newhall failed to put in a challenge, unlucky for Newhall who looked like they were going to hold on. Winshill tried to push for a winner but Newhall were having none of it and saw the game out for a draw.

Final Score: Newhall 1 Winshill 1

Summary: Phil and Sam commented on how good the overall performance was on the whole game, had they have had a bit of luck in the second half where although they came under pressure, they had their moments to extend the lead. It was a great team effort with several players putting their mark on the man of the match award, but it had to go to Harry for his first half penalty save and other saves to keep Winshill out.

Lineman's Viewpoint: A well deserved draw against a team that tried everything to unsettle Newhall with some dubious tackles and niggles off the ball, well done to Harry for a fantastic penalty stop. A great debut for Oliver who is playing in a strikers role for the team.

Next Game: Marlborough Yellow Away 10.30 am Kick off Sunday March 23rd

UP THE NEWHALL !!!
