Hilton halted while Rams exact revenge!
The Rams finally kicked off 2014 with a close fought 7-5 victory over Hilton Harriers Orange avenging the home defeat by the same scoreline from earlier in the season. It had all the makings of a tight game with just two points separating the sides at start of play and in a game made difficult by a heavy pitch the game could have gone either way until Rams wrapped up the points with two late goals.
Rams lined up with Lewis in goal, Callum, Leo, Mia and Josh at the back, Tom, Ben, David and Alex in midfield supporting Harry and Brett in attack.
With the sun in their faces in the first half Rams found themselves behind inside the first minute as the referee played on after what looked like a foul on Josh and the Hilton striker made no mistake with a low finish into the far corner.
Full credit to the Rams though as they recovered from a disappointing start to power into a 3-1 lead, Alex surging through the mud-filled centre of the pitch to fire home the equaliser. He quickly added a second from a similar position and after some good passing opened up the home defence, Harry was through on goal to give the keeper no chance and give Rams a two goal lead.
Harriers hit back and halved the deficit with another well taken goal but Rams were the ones dazzling their hosts with Josh bursting forwards and being in the right place at the right time to finish another good move with a close range finish before Alex completed a fine hat-trick with another shot that gave the keeper no chance.
Harriers scored a third shortly before half time but Rams still had a two goal lead to take into the second half.
Half Time - Newhall Rams 5, Hilton Harriers Orange 3
The home side came out of the blocks quickly at the start of the second half and a good finish from the left side of the goal gave Lewis no chance. Unlike the first half the Rams failed to reply and shortly after the scores were level as Hilton, with renewed confidence , broke through again to score.
The game was in the balance now but Rams found their second wind. With Mia and Leo solid at the back and Callum and Josh battling strongly from the full back positions Hilton chances were less frequent. Tom and David worked hard in midfield, allied with some good link up play down the right from Ben, Harry and Alex, Rams regained the lead when Alex again broke clear to finish well. A through ball from Alex then played Ben in with his shot thumping the post and victory was finally assured when Alex challenged for a loose ball inside the box and managed to steer a low shot beyond the keeper.
Although Hilton pushed to try and get back into it some excellent goalkeeping from Lewis ensured the points came home with the Rams.
Man of the match: Harry – Strong, fast and determined in attack and more than deserved his goal today.
Blackout winner: Louise/Mitchell
