Eagles Put to the Sword by St Georges
Newhall's eagles suffered defeat at the hands, or feet, of St Georges to drop important points and allow Wirksworth to draw level on points in second place!
St Georges started the brighter of the two teams and Chloe Woodward was well off her line to collect a smart through ball. Chloe was then unlucky as the St Georges player found room for the shot on the edge of the box and although getting hands on the shot the ball looped up and into the net.
St Georges then extended their lead after good play down the right and a ball across the box found a St Georges player unmarked at the back post.
Chloe turned a fierce shot round the post and the eagles cleared the resulting corner up field for Natalie Eley to run at the St Georges defence and she was fouled as she shot. Keeley Deery confidently dispatched the kick from the spot.
This seemed to spur on St Georges and within minutes the St Georges player picked the ball up in the area and past the eagles players and place her shot past the advancing Chloe.
The eagles then woke up and Natalie picked up the ball and ran in on goal slotting her shot into the net.
Rosie Collins hit the post after a good run down the right and her next shot was well saved by the St Georges keeper.
Emily Bridge linked up superbly with Natalie playing a great ball for Natalie to run onto and knock the ball past the out rushing keeper, Natalie for her efforts was injured by the keeper and had to come off just before half time.
The eagles could have gone in at half time in front but Emily placed her shot the wrong side of the post after another strong run down the right from Rosie.
St Georges regained the lead early in the half after another unchallenged run down the middle and a fine finish from the St Georges player.
St Georges keeper was then well off her line to grab the through ball and then Chloe produced a great save to keep the eagles in the game.
Keeley cleared another St Georges effort off the line and Emily saw a great free kick well saved.
St Georges keeper then produced another fine stop when Rosie tried her luck from long range and a better save from a superb Keeley strike!
St Georges then took hold of the game with two goals straight down the middle of the park and wrapped up the points with a great shot from just inside the box.
Squad - Chloe Woodward, Whitney Garner, Courtney Mcintosh, Charlotte Catlin, Melita Astle, Mikeala Colebrook, Chloe Johnston, Natalie Eley, Jodie Oughton, Kiera Dyche, Rosie Collins, Emily Bridge, Ella Walker, Keeley Deery.
POM - Natalie Eley, two goals and a great run to secure the penalty, worked tirelessly for the team.
An under par performance from the eagles who have been so strong at the back and not conceded many goals all season!
I'm sure we will come back to prove a point against league leaders Chellaston in the cup next week!
Thanks to Stephen Bridge for stepping in when the ref failed to show up for the first half, well done!
