On a fantastic clear and crisp afternoon watched on by Newhall’s biggest turn out away from home this season ended in disappointment after Newhall  gave their best performance in recent weeks but failed to add to their 6 point hall so far.

With Kier on other duties today it was down to Luke and Sam to take the gloves in each half as goalkeeper for the day, It has to be said that Luke kept the score line down at half time with some great positioning with the sun in his eyes for several strikes on target that he gathered in well. However it was another poor start for Newhall and they found themselves trailing 2-0 within 5 minutes of the start after 2 identical goals were scored from 2 corners, with probably the smallest player on the field being allowed to run through to rifle in 2 great headers, but with no one picking the player up on both occasions it was all too easy for Barton.

Newhall were really being lifted by the support and found themselves level after 20 minutes with 2 well taken goals from Ben and Lewis, it was looking better for Newhall but they went and gave away another 2 sloppy goals before halt time to go in trailing 4-2.

Half Time: Barton 4 Newhall 2

Changes were made as they always are in this squad to give everyone a game even though Newhall were short on their available players for the first time this season, with Harry and Sean coming on for Liam and McKlane after Sam replaced Luke in goal with Luke slotting into midfield. Newhall were once again reminded they needed to put pressure on the Barton players who were being allowed too much time on the ball, and If Newhall wanted to get something out the game they needed to stop standing and watching and get involved. Sadly the management’s words did not sink in until the game was over with Barton rattling in 2 goals back to back as Newhall surrendered possession time and time again. They did relax a little and started to play their own game, after some good forward play and efforts on goal they managed to pull one back with Sean making it 6-3 but you sensed there might be a little fight back on the cards, and although they huffed and puffed and created some more opportunities a seventh goal for Barton sealed Newhall’s fate.

Final Score: Barton Vikings 7 Newhall Lions 3

The after match comments were spot on in trying to keep Newhall focussed for the games ahead of them before the winter break, it hadn’t been a great performance in the first half but it did improve in the second half, and there were some moments in the game where for once Newhall didn’t panic and played some of the football we know they are capable of. The Man of the Match award went to Sean who never stopped running and coming back to help his defence as well as scoring a great goal along the way. A brief interlude from league action next week might allow Newhall to go out and play without fear of the result, something Dave and Phil are not bothered about in this league as long as the players keep improving, there’s a lot to learn for everyone this season as the step up to division 1 football is tough for all of us to come to terms with, but we all remain confident that Newhall will hang in there to survive and go on to improve if they get a second season in this league. It wasn’t all doom and gloom as both Liam and James were given their special 100 game shirts in League and cup turning out for Newhall, that’s 4 in total amongst the lads, a great achievement. Phil and Dave urged the players to believe there will be many more of those along the way if they keep the faith and believe in each other as the weeks unfold towards the end of the season.

Man Of The Match: Sean

Next game: Branston U 13’s Home (Cup)
