For the opening 19 minutes of this game, the Tigers competed well in what looked to be shaping up to be a tight affair. The Tigers were pressing high up the pitch and doing a reasonable job of containing the Willington counter attack.
The boys had been reminded of the Willington danger man, who usually starts from the bench, and his introduction after the first 15 minutes began to cause the Tigers defence real problems.
Wilington began to gain territory and won a series of corners; each defended well but without being able to fully clear our lines. In the end, an unnaturally high lofted ball into the Tigers defence caught us out, with Lewis and keeper Joseph both adjusting to the flight of the ball, the Willington forward leapt to meet it firmly with an unstoppable header, 0-1.
With their very next attack, Willington made what had been an organised defence look anything but, as they carved us open to make it 0-2 on the stroke of half time.
At half time, the boys were reminded that there was still a long way to go in the game, that the next goal would be crucial and that if we were to mount a fight back we would have to look to pass the ball quicker, rather than trying to run the ball into midfield.
Sadly, the Tigers couldn't respond, unable to halt a confident Willington side in full flow, who penned the Tigers not just in our own half, but in our own defensive third for long periods. Changes in Tigers personnel just couldn't seem to gain us any kind of foothold in the game and as goals three and four were added in the final ten minutes, for probably the first time I can recall, the Tigers looked dejected, down hearted and troubled. If anything, the score line flattered Newhall.
Post match it would have been easy to point out to the boys, some of the errors made but that needs to be addressed in training. Instead we asked the boys to put this performance behind them and look ahead to our next game.
The smiles quickly returned to the lads faces courtesy of George's birthday sweets!
